      About

An artist is an instrument and spokesperson for the spirit of his time.

      –Heyder Reyes

Heyder is an artist whose work reflects the deep emotional journey of displacement and the search for identity. His art, shaped by his experiences of emigration, explores the psychological impact of leaving one’s homeland and the inner conflicts that come with starting anew. Through his unique approach, Symbolic Realism, Reyes delves into the complexities of human emotion, particularly themes of isolation, resilience, and longing.

Central to his artistic narrative is the recurring symbol of helmets, particularly diving helmets, which act as metaphors for emotional protection. These helmets shield his figures, representing the invisible barriers people erect as they navigate unfamiliar environments, while also suggesting the weight of isolation. The duality of vulnerability and strength is ever-present in his work, creating a powerful dialogue between the inner self and the external world.

Heyder’s paintings are visually striking for the emotional depth they evoke. His use of symbolism elevates everyday experiences into universal narratives, inviting viewers to reflect on their own emotional journeys. His work transcends personal stories, touching on the broader human condition of feeling uprooted, while still finding strength in new beginnings.

Since leaving Cuba, first to Mexico and then to the United States, Heyder’s art has continued to evolve, becoming a profound reflection on the emotional landscape of displacement. His paintings do not simply illustrate his personal experience, but speak to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of profound change.

In 2024, HECTOR DIAZ Gallery proudly welcomed Heyder Reyes. His art offers an intimate exploration of identity and survival, while engaging viewers in a conversation about the emotional and psychological facets of transition and transformation. Each piece serves as a visual testament to the complex layers of human emotion, making Heyder's work both personal and universally resonant.
